Santeria, also known as Lucumí or Regla de Ocha, is an Afro-Caribbean religion that originated in Cuba. At the heart of Santeria are the Orishas, the divine spirits or deities that are revered and worshipped. These Orishas are often associated with specific natural phenomena, elements, or human attributes, and they are believed to guide and protect their devotees.

One of the essential tools used in Santeria rituals is the Jicaras, small bowls or cups made from the dried and hollowed-out gourds of the Jícaro tree. These Jicaras are used for a variety of purposes, including the preparation and presentation of offerings to the Orishas, divination practices, and the containment of ritual materials.

The term "Santo" is used in Santeria to refer to the Orishas themselves, as well as the rituals, practices, and beliefs associated with the religion. The Palo religion, also known as Palo Mayombe or Regla de Palo, is another Afro-Caribbean tradition that is closely related to Santeria and often intertwined with it.

Santeria has its roots in the beliefs and practices of the Yoruba people of West Africa, who were brought to Cuba as enslaved individuals during the colonial era. Over time, these African traditions blended with the spiritual beliefs and practices of the indigenous Taíno people, as well as the Roman Catholic traditions of the Spanish colonizers, creating the unique and syncretic religion known as Santeria.

One of the central tenets of Santeria is the belief in the existence of the Orishas, each of whom is associated with a specific aspect of the natural world or human experience. These Orishas are believed to have their own distinct personalities, preferences, and areas of influence, and devotees will often seek to build a personal relationship with the Orisha that they feel most drawn to or aligned with.

The practice of Santeria involves a range of rituals and ceremonies, including divination, the making of offerings and sacrifices, the possession of devotees by the Orishas, and the initiation of new practitioners into the religion. These practices are often conducted in sacred spaces, such as the Paleros, which are small altars or shrines dedicated to the Orishas.

In recent decades, Santeria has gained increased recognition and visibility, both within Cuba and in the wider global community. While it remains a relatively small and often misunderstood religion, Santeria continues to play an important role in the cultural and spiritual life of many Cubans and people of African descent throughout the Caribbean and Latin America.
